Former Manchester United wonderkid Callum Gribbin has taken a key step in relaunching his career.
Callum Gribbin was a player Manchester United fans had very high hopes for, with comparisons made to past greats. During his time in the Manchester United academy, he produced a highlight reel which saw him tipped for the top, including a stunning free-kick in the FA Youth Cup.
Gribbin represented England at under-16 and under-17 level, and dazzled for United’s under-18s and under-21s side, before losing momentum.
Over the past year, Gribbin has been battling to save his career after suffering a horror injury.

What happened to Callum Gribbin
Callum Gribbin trained with Manchester United’s first team under Louis van Gaal, after impressing when he first broke into the under-18s.
By time the summer of 2019 came around, Manchester United released Callum Gribbin, deciding there was no path for him to break into the first team. There were question marks over what would come next, and Gribbin was also forced to deny rumours he had quit football altogether.
Gribbin signed with Sheffield United to join their under-21 side, but was unable to make the step up. He left after a season.
He then made the move to sign with League Two side Barrow, where he made his competitive debut, before signing with non-league Radcliffe a year later.
In 2022, Gribbin signed with FC United of Manchester, looking to rebuild his career, and there were bright sparks, where he showed some of the magic he demonstrated in the academy at Carrington.
Then in early 2023, disaster struck. Callum Gribbin suffered a devastating knee injury, rupturing his ACL, medial ligament and posterior ligament.
Gribbin was forced to fundraise for an operation, as due to his non-league status, the PFA was only able to provide half the cash.
It has been a long road to recovery for the player, who has been determined to get back on the football pitch.
Callum Gribbin makes comeback
Last month Callum Gribbin returned to training, sharing a picture back in FC United of Manchester colours.
Now a month on, 16 months since suffering his horror injury, Gribbin is back playing again, coming on as a substitute in a friendly against Trafford, playing the final 23 minutes.
Gribbin’s return was greeted by ‘a huge round of applause’ from fans, keen to see the former Manchester United talent get his career moving in a forward direction.
Now 25-years-old, Gribbin said: “I’m just really happy to be back. It’s been a long time to be out of football, so I’m really excited for the season.”
Gribbin has seen his dreams dashed before so he will know that the path ahead will have its challenges, but it is good to see him persisting and return to playing.
His former academy teammate Demetri Mitchell posted on X: “Good to see you back on the pitch bro. One of the most technically gifted players I’ve touched pitch with.”
Mitchell has previously selected Gribbin in a best teammate XI, which also featured Marcus Rashford, Dean Henderson and Adnan Januzaj.
Last November, Gribbin was invited back to Carrington by Manchester United along with six other former academy players for an Alumni Training Camp, the first of its kind.
The purpose was to provide support and advice for former players, spearheaded by academy director Nick Cox.
Not every top prospect who comes through United’s doors will achieve their maximum potential. Gribbin is an example of a ‘lost talent’ in many ways. He was capable of much more than he has delivered, but at 25, there is still time for him to achieve something in the game, and just get back to enjoying it.
