Erik ten Hag has admitted he is concerned about Lisandro Martinez’s injury he suffered against Sevilla.
Martinez was carried off by two Sevilla players late in the game at Old Trafford, both concerned for his wellbeing.
The centre-back put his head in his hands and had to be helped down the tunnel in a stretcher.
United had led 2-0 before letting the lead slip to draw 2-2 after two deflected efforts tied the game.
Reaction to Martinez
Erik ten Hag told BT Sport he is concerned about Lisandro Martinez. He referenced the non-contact nature of the injury.
He said: “When Licha Martinez drops out with no opponent involved, it doesn’t look that great.”
Ten Hag made no further diagnosis, adding that the medical team would carry out their own assessment.
He gave little away on Raphael Varane either, who was substituted at half-time.
Paul Scholes told BT he suspected it might be an Achilles injury. Dion Dublin told MUTV it could have been a metatarsal injury, which would be less severe.
Ten Hag refuted that it was the Achilles. He said: “It was not the area of the Achilles.”
He added that he won’t play on Sunday but did not want to make any further diagnosis.
Martinez looked tearful as he came off, and United had to play out the rest of the game with 10 men.
Everything began to go wrong in the last 10 minutes for United, with two late goals conceded and Martinez’s injury.
It is all to play for in the second leg. But we put that out of our minds for now. All our focus is on Martinez and a swift recovery.
