Phil Jones has been on borrowed time at Manchester United for far too long. After bizarrely being offered a new contract in 2019, the defender has extended his time at Old Trafford for far longer than anybody except Ed Woodward felt was sensible.
Jones has not travelled on Manchester United’s pre-season tour, with the club’s official website stating he will under a specialist individual training programme.
Injuries have blighted Jones’ career, he started only two games last season. It is exasperating for supporters that he is still taking up a squad space and has not been sold.
However, Jones’ former Blackburn Rovers teammate David Dunn believes the defender could still have a part to play this season, and have a positive effect.

‘Ten Hag will want to keep Phil Jones around’
Dunn told The Sun that Jones’ character will make him a positive influence for the rest of the squad.
He explained: “There are times when some players maybe won’t go out and give their all, that’s never the case with him.
“That’s why he has picked up injuries but I see that attitude as a positive and, as a coach, I’d want it in my dressing room. I’m sure Ten Hag will think the same.”
He added: “I know he’s had injuries but for all the problems he is still only 30 and don’t forget, that means he hasn’t got the miles on his legs.”

Setting the wrong example
It’s easy to counter Dunn’s remarks. While nobody questions Jones’ positive mindset despite the problems he has had, keeping Jones around actually sets the wrong example.
United need to be ruthless and stop players hanging around and simply picking up a wage at the club for doing very little. By tolerating Jones’ situation, United make it acceptable for others.
As Dunn points out, Jones is only 30. He could have success elsewhere playing more regularly, even if this means dropping down a division.
It’s possible Jones’ individual training programme is designed to set him up for a transfer move. The fee should not be important at this point.
United could let Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe leave the club this summer. If that happens, then Jones has a chance to stay on as emergency cover – but if an offer comes in, both he and the club should take it.
