Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been speaking to the media ahead of tonight’s match with Liverpool.

Ten Hag was quoted by the club website saying he is determined to turn the club’s fortunes around, and confidently says he believes he will be successful.

The Dutchman said: “I am not here for myself. I am here to help the club and to restore the club and I knew before coming here this is a challenge. I wanted this challenge.

“I knew before but I wanted that because everywhere in my career where I have started the start was always difficult, but I get it done, I am convinced I can get it done here as well.”

Working on improving player leadership qualities

Manchester United’s players need strong leadership from Erik ten Hag, especially at this moment after two opening defeats.

Ten Hag admitted that this was a trait lacking among United’s players in the losses to Brighton and Brentford, and he is working on improving it.

He said: “‘I always work with a group of leaders, not just one in particular. I spoke with the leaders about this issue we have, yes. This is also a process. We have worked on this for a couple of weeks now and it needs time to grow.”

The addition of new signing Casemiro will help once he is eligible to join the squad. There’s even a case the midfielder should be made captain.

Ten Hag said he hoped the players were deeply unhappy with the result against Brentford, with themselves and with each other.

“I hope some of them are angry by themselves. Angry with each other that they didn’t take responsibility for each other. What I say is that it is not acceptable and you cannot live with it.”

He also added that he was not interested in hearing excuses, commenting: “I am not interested in the reason why. I think they just have to deliver.”

The manager is expected to make changes for tonight’s match with Liverpool, with the team looking for a statement win to get the season up and running.

A victory tonight can change everything, and Ten Hag’s leadership will be key if United are to get the team’s first points of the season on the board. He just needs the players to match his own conviction.
