Manchester United star Andre Onana has been told that he must “press the reset” after failing to impress under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Andre Onana played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and the Manchester United shot-stopper was reunited with the Dutchman at Old Trafford in 2023.

David de Gea left Old Trafford at the end of the 2022-23 campaign and the Red Devils completed a stunning swoop for Onana from Inter Milan.

Onana, who was signed by United in a deal worth £47.2m, had a mixed start to life at Old Trafford during his debut season at the Premier League club.

The 28-year-old former Ajax and Inter Milan star came under heavy criticism for his form in the 2023-24 campaign, including his howlers in the Champions League.

However, Erik ten Hag showed unwavering support for Onana and the former United manager backed the Cameroonian to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Onana appeared to turn the page on his United career at the start of the 2024-25 campaign and impressed with his consistency before Ten Hag was sacked.

But the United star’s form has taken a hit since Ruben Amorim’s arrival at the Red Devils in November and Onana has once again been placed under the spotlight.

Onana receives message from ex-Man Utd man

Andre Onana still remains in the race for the Premier League Golden Glove, despite Manchester United’s form taking a major hit in recent weeks.

The Cameroon international has six clean sheets to his name in the Premier League and Onana is only two clean sheets behind Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels.

Massimo Taibi, who had an ill-fated spell at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson, has now urged Onana to do some “soul-searching” after his dip in form.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, the ex-United man said: “I’d be straight to the point and tell him, ‘Andre, you are one of the best ‘keepers in Europe but in the Premier League, you are under-performing.

“‘Block out criticism, do some soul-searching, press the reset and go again. And if things don’t change by June, move on.’

“I think subconsciously the United environment isn’t ideal for him and when a marriage is showing cracks, it’s pointless to continue.

“Sometimes things don’t work out at a team and it’s best to go separate ways, which would not be a failure.”

Taibi’s verdict on Man Utd star Onana

Onana came under criticism after he conceded from a direct corner in the 2-0 Premier League defeat to Wolves at the Molineux last Thursday.

United have been exposed from set pieces under Ruben Amorim, with Altay Bayindir also conceding from a direct corner in the Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham.

Massimo Taibi has insisted that Onana is “not cut out” for the Premier League and the United No 1 is only able to show certain strengths in English football.

“For me, he’s a strong goalkeeper who finds himself in a situation where he can’t show his skills because he is not cut out for the English game,” he continued.

“He’s only suited to the Prem when it comes to his ball-playing ability and structure.”
