Some of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United signings have been questionable – to say the least.

The Dutch manager has made 16 signings during his tenure at Old Trafford, with only a few standing out as decent purchases.

The likes of Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and a few more will all go down as good shouts by Ten Hag and his coaching staff.

His summer purchases for the 23/24 season haven’t exactly hit the ground running, apart from one – who is arguably Manchester United’s signing of the summer.

Jonny Evans never gives the ball away

The Manchester United veteran has slowly turned into one of the most integral players for the first-team squad.

His game-saving performance against Aston Villa was one of many fine outings in the Northern Irishmans repertoire this campaign – but one thing we can’t help but notice is he never gives the ball away.

This is reflected in his stats. Over the last five games he’s started, here are how many times Evans has lost possession in each.

• Aston Villa: 4 times possession lost
• West Ham: 12 times possession lost
• Liverpool: 5 times possession lost
• Fulham: 9 times possession lost
• Copenhagen: 1-time possession lost

Throughout the season, Evans is averaging losing the ball just 6 times a game. That is simply phenomenal.

We knew Evans was going to be a calming influence at the club, but to be performing this well at 35 is a real achievement. We just hope some of the other summer signings follow suit in due time.

Manchester United summer signings need to follow Jonny Evans’ lead

2024 is big for the other Manchester United summer signings – all of them in fact.

Rasmus Hojlund finally got his Premier League goal against Villa, so will be seriously looking to kick on in 2024.

Mason Mount is coming back from injury and will be desperate to stake a claim at Old Trafford after his £60m transfer.

Altay Bayindir will finally get his chance in goal with Andre Onana heading to AFCON, and the Cameroonian will have to fight for his place on his return.

Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat also face the test of deeming themselves worthy to remain at the club, with their loan deals set to expire in the new year.
