Erik ten Hag provides Lisandro Martinez injury update, it’s good news

Manchester United have provided an injury update on the fitness of Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez.

Lisandro Martinez made his return to the Manchester United first team in a substitute appearance against Tottenham Hotspur and has started both games since then.

He started against Wolves in the frantic 4-3 win over the Black Country side but had to be substituted and appeared to be receiving some strapping to the same foot that he suffered a season-ending injury against Sevilla in the Europa League in the last campaign.

The Argentine defender has been such a big miss for the Red Devils this campaign and the club has now provided an update on his fitness.

United’s Martinez update

Speaking to the media after the win, Erik ten Hag moved to allay the fears of the fanbase with his update after the game.

“It was a precaution,” Ten Hag told the United website. “I took him off because, actually I had to sub Rasmus [Hojlund] because he was dead with all his running! But then we needed an extra header but, also for Licha, I think he is a long way out. We brought Harry on for [an] extra header and Omari Forson for Rasmus.”

This will be a big boost for the Red Devils but United must ensure that they prevent Martinez from further injury troubles and with the more than capable backup option of Harry Maguire waiting in the wings, there is really no excuse from the Dutchman in avoiding aggravating any existing problems the Argentine has.

As well as this update on Martinez’s fitness, there has also been an update on the fitness of Victor Lindelof, who has been absent for the last couple of weeks.

As per Simon Peach, Ten Hag said that the Swedish defender is now ‘on his way back’ to the first team and his return could be key if Martinez is having injury problems.

Elsewhere, Sofyan Amrabat is set to return to training on Saturday after his exploits in the Africa Cup of Nations. The Moroccan midfielder may well find it hard to break back into the first team, however.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, does not expect Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Mount, or Tyrell Malacia to be back this weekend, according to Simon Peach.
