Manchester United have had a bad season, and now the true extent of that has been quantified through data.

It has been a long season, full of ups and downs for Manchester United. Ultimately though, many cannot wait for it to end.

With large spells of atrocious football, results and injuries, there have only been a few moments to revel in.

Erik ten Hag has his side sitting in sixth, with an outside chance of Champions League qualification should things go well over the next few weeks.

But this might not even be what United deserves, as data shows where the club deserves to be in the league according to expected points.

Erik ten Hag is actually over-performing this season

While there is some real discontent over where Ten Hag has United right now, data has now shown that we’re lucky to be sixth.

According to UnderStat, the expected points Premier League table would actually have United in 14th, just three points above 17th place.

• 14th – Manchester United: 36.28
• 15th – Fulham: 35.87
• 16th – Crystal Palace: 35.37
• 17th – Wolves: 33.82

An expected points tally of 36.28, means United have overperformed by 11.72, a pretty significant amount which is more than anyone in the league.

This shows just how atrocious Ten Hag has had his side playing, regardless of wins and draws, the actual performances have been awful.

It’s completely unsustainable, and sooner or later it’s likely that things will take a real turn for the worse unless changes are made by the manager or Ineos.

Reasons for Manchester United to make managerial change keep adding up

In an ideal world, everyone would want Ten Hag to succeed but the way things are going, he’s making it difficult.

Seeing so many flaws with his team right now, as he continues to ignore and act as though it’s normal is concerning.

While injuries are a massive factor, there’s no excuse for how awful he’s set the team up, as the quality should still be there to dominate Brentford for example.

As we rapidly approach the end of this season, it seems more and more likely that Ineos will feel themselves forced into a change this summer.

With nine games remaining this season, it’s so important for the Dutchman that he improves his performances otherwise an FA Cup final might not be enough to save him.
