Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag.

It’s official – Erik ten Hag is no longer the manager of Manchester United. The club confirmed on Monday morning that the Dutchman has left, after just two years in the role.

During this time Ten Hag had some fantastic Manchester United moments – including the Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumph, so will Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos mob regret sacking him?

Well, he may have already let them know why they might.

Why would Manchester United regret sacking Erik ten Hag?

In an interview with MUTV in September, Ten Hag told club media why United, and Ineos, still trust him in the job.

“I think we’ve proven the last two years we win. I’ve proven in my career that always I will win. The last six years, I have eight trophies,” he begins.

“So we have to adapt the game model, get a stronger team, work on our problems, get the solutions and when we do this, I’m sure we will achieve the targets we have set this season.”

Ten Hag was then asked what these targets are, he replied simply: “Trophies.”

Despite all his downfalls, one thing is clear with Ten Hag at the helm – he’s capable of going on a cup run, but was that really enough considering his shoddy league form?

Erik Ten Hag trophies with Manchester United

Ten Hag won two trophies at Manchester United, the Carabao Cup (2023) and the FA Cup (2024).

Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup with Manchester United on February 26, 2023. They won 2-0 against Newcastle at Wembley, with goals from Casemiro and a Sven Botman OG.

Ten Hag won the FA Cup with Manchester United on May 25, 2024. United won 2-1 against Manchester City, with goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, with a Jeremy Doku City strike.

On paper, Ten Hag at United was a success – but it wasn’t enough for him to be shown the door.
