Erik ten Hag gives short response when asked about Alejandro Garnacho penalty spot incident

Erik ten Hag has spoken out about the incident involving Alejandro Garnacho before the penalty for Copenhagen was taken during Manchester United’s 1-0 win.

After scraping through the game, Manchester United struck first through Harry Maguire and looked set to be holding on for the victory.

However, it was a Scott McTominay high boot which was given as a penalty against Ten Hag’s side and had Jacob Larsson, son of former United striker Henrik Larsson, scored then the Red Devils may well have started to think about Europa League football.

Andre Onana, as it happened, saved the penalty and brought an eruption of cheers at Old Trafford but the Danish side were not happy.

Ten Hag on Garnacho

As you might expect, the Dutchman was asked for his thoughts on the penalty incident and the gamesmanship from Alejandro Garnacho, that the United fans loved.

“I didn’t see it. The referee probably didn’t see it either. I don’t know,” Ten Hag said.

Whether that is true or not is an irrelevance, it’s about time that a United player does some gamesmanship to win the game at Old Trafford.

There are too many times during tight games, where the Reds may be leading, that the players don’t do things to wind down the clock, whether it’s taking the ball to the corner or players going down ‘injured’.

United’s luck

Despite Copenhagen captain Victor Claesson not being impressed with the antics from the 19-year-old, United held on and won the game.

When looking back on the group results, United winning this game by hook or by crook will be what counts if the Red Devils make it to the knockout stages.

Despite the rather bizarre nature of the wins, United have three wins on the board and can, hopefully, take this confidence into the Manchester derby and a win against the noisy neighbours would really kick off their season.
