Erik ten Hag has provided an update on Manchester United’s potential search for a new striker in the January transfer window.
It’s no secret that Manchester United have been incredibly light in the striker department this campaign with Rasmus Hojlund struggling to justify the £64 million price tag.
Joining from Atalanta in the summer, Hojlund has netted two Premier League goals and five Champions League goals and thrashed in a superb opener against Tottenham Hotspur in the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.
His back-up, Anthony Martial, has struggled to prove he can be good enough for the Red Devils and his latest injury problem has hammered home this problem.
Ten Hag on striker pursuit
Speaking to the media ahead of United’s FA Cup game against Newport County at Rodney Parade, the Dutchman was asked whether a new forward would be brought in this month.
“No space on FFP to do something about this lack of quantity in the striker position,” the Dutchman said bluntly,as per the Manchester Evening News. This will come as a significant blow to the Red Devils as United will now have to rely on Hojlund for the majority of the campaign as the club’s only striker.
Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has been linked with a move to Old Trafford but it now seems Ten Hag will go into the final few months of the season with one senior striker.
Lack of signing mistake waiting to happen
United heading into the last few months of the season without a quality backup striker seems like a mistake waiting to happen.
Were Hojlund to suffer an injury similar to the one that he suffered against Luton Town, which kept him out for a few weeks, Marcus Rashford, who is finally finding some form, may well be shifted through the middle.
Yes, the quality in the market may well not be as high as it once was but this seems like such a risk for the Red Devils and one that could blow up in the club’s face if they suffer more injury issues this campaign.
