Erik ten Hag has explained why Christian Eriksen misses out against Newcastle United and why Marcus Rashford is on the bench.

The Danish playmaker, who has started every Premier League game for the Red Devils since joining the club on a free transfer, is not part of the matchday squad.

With Ten Hag not having Eriksen available as well as Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek being unavailable, the former Ajax manager has brought academy star Kobbie Mainoo into the first team fold, and the 17-year-old starts the game against the Magpies on the bench.

McTominay, who scored a 93rd-minute winner against Omonia Nicosia on Thursday night, misses out through suspension.

The Scotland international picked up his fifth Premier League booking of the season at Everton last Sunday.

According to BBC Sport, Ten Hag said Eriksen is out of today’s 2pm kick off against Eddie Howe’s Toon Army through illness and Rashford is on the bench as he is “under the weather and not 100% fit”.

David de Gea will make his 500th appearance for the Red Devils.

Speaking on the Spaniard’s achievement, Ten Hag said: “It’s massive. When you play 500 games for Manchester United it is a big achievement.

“I want to congratulate him, the number one for Manchester United well done.”

The Dutchman has made three changes to the side that beat Omonia on Thursday night.
