Erik ten Hag explains what Altay Bayindir needs to do to break into the Man United first-team

Erik ten Hag has explained how Altay Bayindir can get his chance in the Manchester United first team following Andre Onana’s mistake against Galatasaray.

Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead twice against Galatasaray with the second goal scored by Hakim Ziyech being a calamitous error of judgement by Andre Onana.

Ziyech’s free-kick was fired at the goalkeeper but the Cameroon international spilled it into his own net which prompted the comeback with another goal coming for the hosts barely five minutes later.

There have been calls for Altay Bayindir to come into the team for the final game against Bayern Munich which will decide United’s fate in the competition.

Ten Hag on Bayindir

Well, speaking to the Manchester Evening News after the game, the Dutchman has detailed how the £4 million signing from Fenerbahce can break into the first team.

“We are very happy with our keeper group,” Ten Hag said. “Andre, Altay, Tom (Heaton), as a group they do really well, they have good performances and they have to push each other.

“We are very pleased with Altay. He gets used to the Premier League, and he gets used to European football, which is tough when you are coming from Turkey but we are very pleased with the process. He is doing very well.

“He has to be patient but if he works well, if he keeps his progress, he will get his chances and he has to take this.”

The time is approaching when the Turkish goalkeeper will have to get minutes in the side if Onana does decide to go to the African Cup Of Nations with Cameroon.

Bayindir’s chance

Bayindir, 25, has yet to make his debut for the Red Devils but with the Africa Cup Of Nations approaching, he will need the game time otherwise he will be rusty for this stretch of games.

He has had to wait long enough for his chances in the first team and with the mistakes Onana is making in Europe, starting the Turkish goalkeeper against Bayern may be the way to go.

Ten Hag, however, is a very stubborn and loyal man so expect Onana to start the game against Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern when they visit Old Trafford next month.
