Eric Djemba-Djemba has a warning for Manchester United star over his future

Andre Onana has been warned that he risks not being Erik ten Hag’s first choice at Manchester United if he makes one decision.

Manchester United picked up a vital point at Anfield against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool last weekend and that was, in part, down to a brilliant goalkeeping display from Andre Onana.

Onana joined United for £43 million in the summer after David De Gea’s contract at the club expired in July and the Cameroon international was seen as the goalkeeper to take United forward with their possession-based style of play.

United, however, could lose Onana for a month after the goalkeeper patched up his differences with Cameroon manager Rigobert Song, but the 27-year-old goalkeeper has been warned against that decision.

Djemba-Djemba on Onana

Former United midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba has warned that the former Ajax goalkeeper could be at risk of losing his first-team spot in the team.

“One of the problems for him is even if he plays well over the next month, he then goes away for a month to Afcon,” Djemba-Djemba told BBC Sport Africa.

“He knows if he goes, maybe he will lose his place at Manchester United. He has to decide what is best for him. He just needs to do what is best for his career.”

Altay Bayindir looks set for a month in between the sticks at Old Trafford but it does seem unlikely, unless the Turkish goalkeeper performs exceptionally, that Onana would lose his place in the team.

Onana and Bayindir

It’s no secret that in the Champions League, the goalkeeper has struggled massively with his errors against Galatasaray, in particular, costing United a place in the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition.

However, in the Premier League, the goalkeeper has settled far more quickly and looked back to his best with eight saves made against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Onana had the poise and composure to turn away from the pressing Darwin Nunez which meant the Red Devils beat Liverpool’s first line of pressure and could play out and launch attacks.

Losing him for a month is a big blow and relying on Bayindir, who is yet to play a minute for the Red Devils despite impressing in training, will be a big risk but it is unclear whether Onana will be going to the Africa Cup of Nations, at this moment in time.
