He explained: “Yeah, we had some conversations about it. Actually, he was the first one I told that I’d be leaving Ajax and would go to Manchester United.

“I think in his emotion he’s still Manchester United. He’s a fan: he’s the biggest fan, maybe yeah? Especially in Ajax. But he has to lead Ajax in this moment and I’m sure he will always support Manchester United and he will support me, as long as we are not playing against Ajax.”

  • INSIGHT: Erik ten Hag worked for two years at Bayern Munich II, learning from first team boss Pep Guardiola.
  • IMPACT: After a spell at Utrecht, Ten Hag was hired by Ajax and within 18 months had led them to a Champions League semi-final.
  • TROPHIES: Ten Hag has won two Eredivisie titles with Ajax and two KNVB Cups, and hopes to win a third title this season.
  • GOALS: Ajax have scored 98 goals in the league this season and conceded only 19 in 34 matches.

Ten Hag added: “I’ve been aware of the massive presence and the massive audience around Man United. It’s all over the world, so I’ve been aware, and I will do my best and take responsibility to deliver them the success they need.”

Van der Sar previously said goodbye with a farewell speech to the manager on the pitch in front of Ajax supporters after winning the league.

He will always be on hand for advice if Ten Hag needs it, and the pair worked very well together at Ajax, who he leaves behind.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper enjoyed huge success with the Red Devils, winning the Champions League and multiple Premier League titles.

United are currently amid a five year trophy drought, and Ten Hag faces a huge challenge to turn it all around. But he is up for the challenge, and that counts for a lot.
