Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that he would love to hold a dream crossover fight at Manchester United’s iconic Old Trafford stadium involving a club legend.

Hearn, who is the promoter for former two-time unified champion Anthony Joshua, was in Manchester on Saturday evening for the KSI vs Tommy Fury fight.

The Matchroom chief watched on at the AO Arena as United fan Fury defeated YouTuber KSI by unanimous decision on the Misfits Boxing pay-per-view card.

Tyson Fury, much like his half-brother Tommy, is a United fan and the WBC champ has previously expressed his desire to stage a dream fight at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney vs Jake Paul, anyone?

Hearn has now admitted that United legend Wayne Rooney will “fire me a message” after “every big fight” and “could still fight” if he wanted to now.

Rooney, who was recently appointed Birmingham City manager, is known to be a big boxing fan and the idea of him crossing over into the sport would be a wild idea.

However, Hearn has dreamed about the prospect of holding a fight involving the 37-year-old former United striker and YouTube star Jake Paul at Old Trafford.

“After every big fight, especially with a YouTuber, sometimes Wayne Rooney will fire me a message,” he said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show.

“I’ve said to Wayne, who had a very limited amateur pedigree but could still fight, imagine the shape you’d get in, I told him.

“Wayne Rooney against Jake Paul at Old Trafford, imagine that.”

Rooney loves the sport of boxing

While it seems highly unlikely for Rooney to take part in a boxing match, United’s record scorer has openly spoken — and shown — his love for the combat sport.

Rooney’s famous celebrations include his shadowboxing after he scored in United’s 3-0 Premier League win over Tottenham at Old Trafford in 2015.

The former United and England captain previously opened up to Hearn about growing up with boxing and how entrenched it was in his family.

Speaking on the BBC podcast No Passion, No Point, Rooney said (via Manchester United’s website): “Boxing is the sport I like watching the most.

“My dad boxed and my whole family. I have grown up with boxing.

“My uncle is still running the gym in Croxteth, which he has ran for 20 to 30 years. It is just something that is in me as well.

“Thankfully, I wasn’t as good at boxing as I was at football, so I think my career went the right way it was meant to!”
