Diego Leon responds after receiving first ever senior Paraguay call-up

Diego Leon received his first international call-up with Paraguay’s senior team for the October internationals.

It has been a remarkable year in Diego Leon’s career as a footballer.

The youngster signed a pre-agreement with Manchester United in January, which allowed Leon’s move to the Red Devils from Cerro Porteno in July after he turned 18.

Although Leon is now having to wait patiently for his United debut, Ruben Amorim is not prepared to throw him into the deep end until he shows signs of being ready. Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot are ahead of the youngster in the pecking order, so he has plenty of time to develop his game at Carrington.

Leon earned his first call-up with the senior Paraguay side last week, which is something he can benefit massively from, to experience training with other senior professionals.

United fans will hope to see Leon get rewarded with a debut before the international break comes to an end. It would also give more of us a chance to see him in action following a recent appearance with United’s under-21 side.

Diego Leon enjoying experience with Paraguay national team

The last few days have been crazy for Leon because it will feel like a step closer to earning his first cap for the Paraguay national team.

It shows that Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro is aware of Leon following his breakthrough at Cerro Porteno and the consequential move to United.

Leon will now train with the likes of Sunderland’s Omar Alderete and former Newcastle star Miguel Almiron.

There are no guarantees that Leon will feature for Paraguay this time around, but they have two friendly matches against Japan and Paraguay.

However, Leon is making the most of the overall experience, likely sponging off the senior professionals in the squad whom he admires.

Leon has updated his Instagram with photos from Paraguay training, along with the caption: “A unique feeling!”

Hopefully, this is just the start of many unique feelings in Leon’s career for United and, of course, Paraguay.

Diego Leon begins push for World Cup squad

Paraguay are one of 18 nations that have already booked their place at the 2026 World Cup.

On top of that, Leon is one of 18 United players on international duty right now.

Leon’s recent call-up means that the Paraguay manager has the United youngster on his list of considerations for the big year ahead.

It doesn’t mean Leon will be at the World Cup next summer, but his first call-up allows him to make an impression on Alfaro.

United In Focus will be keeping a close eye on Leon during the international break.
