Man Utd starlet receives first senior international call up, despite waiting for debut under Ruben Amorim

Diego Leon could make his debut for the Paraguay national team before appearing for Manchester United’s first team.

The 2025/26 campaign is underway, and Manchester United are sitting in the bottom half of the table after six matches.

It has been a rough welcome for United’s five new signings because Ruben Amorim is not getting the results he would’ve wanted after finishing 15th in the Premier League and missing out on European football last season.

Bryan Mbeumo has had a bright start to life at United on an individual note, scoring two goals and winning United’s player of the month award for August. The only other new signing to find the back of the net is Benjamin Sesko, after United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford last weekend.

While Matheus Cunha waits for his maiden goal for the club, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon have yet to make their competitive debuts for United’s first team.

Lammens and Leon will hope they are not waiting too long for their debuts.

Diego Leon called up to Paraguay national team

There appears to be excitement building in Paraguay over United youngster Leon.

Leon signed a pre-agreement with United in January before leaving Cerro Porteno after he turned 18 in the summer.

After previously representing Paraguay at U20 level, Leon will be aiming to get a chance in the senior national team.

That wish has been granted with Leon named in Paraguay’s latest squad for the October international break.

The call-up comes a month after Paraguay secured their place at the 2026 World Cup. It means Leon will be under contention to compete at the tournament should he take advantage of his opportunities.

Paraguay have two friendlies coming up against Japan and South Korea.

United in Focus will be paying close attention to see if Leon features in any of those games.

Despite only joining United in the summer, Leon has quickly settled into his new surroundings.

According to the Daily Mail, Leon is making his mark as Mr Popular among his peers.

A source told the newspaper: “He’s like a little brother to a lot of these guys.

“They are giving him a bit of stick, having a laugh.

“But they are fiercely protective over him and are really looking after him.”

It’s an impressive feat for a youngster who isn’t fully fluent when it comes to the English language.

Leon’s popularity will only rise once he makes his United debut.
