‘Destiny brought me here’… Ex-Man Utd superkid unveiled at new club, presented by Premier League cult hero

One of Manchester United’s former prospects has joined a new club, and was presented by a former Premier League star.

The year before Manchester United scooped up La Liga prospects Alejandro Garnacho, Marc Jurado and Alvaro Fernandez, the club took another gamble.

United snapped up prolific Real Zaragoza talent Mateo Mejia, hoping he would become a top striker for the team.

Mejia had a nightmare start at United, he was stretchered off with an injury on his under-18s debut at Carrington in 2019, and went on to undergo two operations.

While he trained with United’s first team, and began to bounce back for the under-21s, Mejia was sold to Sevilla in January 2024, where he went into their B team.

Mateo Mejia signs with Burgos

Mateo Mejia’s time at Sevilla has come to an end. He has been sold to Segunda Division side Burgos.

The deal went through a week ago, with Burgos officially presenting Mejia to the media on July 30.

Mejia was unveiled by Burgos’ director of football, former Swansea City star Michu.

Speaking about the move, Mejia expressed his excitement: “Last year I had the opportunity to make my debut in the First Division with Sevilla FC, and this year I knew I wanted to play for a professional team.

“Finally, destiny has brought me here, and I’m going to give everything for this shirt and this badge.”

“I’m young and 22 years old. I’m making my debut in this category, and it’s a real challenge. I feel responsible for the opportunity the club has given me, and I hope everything goes well. I’m really looking forward to this.”

How Mateo Mejia fared for Sevilla

Mateo Mejia made his first team debut for Sevilla in October 2024, and was praised by the Spanish media following an impressive performance.

However, this 10 minute cameo was the only appearance he made for the Sevilla first team. He played 47 times for their B team, scoring 11 goals.

Speaking about his game, Mejia said: “I define myself as a fast forward, with directness and a goal-scoring ability. In football, there are streaks, and sometimes it goes in and other times it doesn’t.

“I think I have a lot to give to the club and that I’ll be able to bring out the best in myself.”

Now for the first time in his career, Mejia is at a club where he has a chance to play regular first team football. We wish him the best.
