Denis Irwin gives verdict on why Manchester United lost and reacts to Lisandro Martinez performance

Manchester United dropped points after conceding a late goal for the second time in a week.

A 90th minute goal saw Arsenal win 3-2 against United, following Michael Olise’s injury time equaliser for Crystal Palace.

A potential four points from two away games ended up as just one point gained. The winning momentum has been zapped in an instant.

The fixture pile-up has caught United out, and former Red Devils defender Denis Irwin believes that fatigue is a big problem for the squad.

Denis Irwin on why United lost

Treble winner Denis Irwin told MUTV that the two away games in London in quick succession were asking a lot from the squad, with the Palace match re-arranged at short notice.

Arsenal meanwhile had a week off, and Irwin believes the Gunners were fresh and benefited from this extra preparation time and not having to travel.

He also called on Erik ten Hag to rotate his side where he can for the upcoming Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.

Irwin said: “I think for me, you could see the fatigue that travelling during the week inflicts on a team. It’s frustrating, but we gave it our all.

“There are so many matches and coming back from a strange season anyway. Arsenal came into it with a free week and we looked tired. Unfortunately they got a break at the right time.

“Erik will freshen things up against Forest. He has to use the squad.”

Irwin on Martinez

Irwin did praise Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, who scored the team’s second goal of the game.

He felt the Argentine’s performance deserved more, and appreciated the efforts he has made since joining from Ajax in the summer.

He’s brought a bit of oomph to the team this season. You see him there with his bandage around his head. It’s unfortunate that his first goal came in defeat because he’s been brilliant for us.”
