David Ornstein provides update on Manchester United potentially terminating Jadon Sancho’s contract

Manchester United have a big problem to resolve over wantaway winger Jadon Sancho.

Former Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho was supposed to be the missing piece to Manchester United’s puzzle, not the source of more problems.

Instead he is heading towards an exit, if Manchester United can find a taker, with Sancho warned this week he is less appealing to clubs than Donny van de Beek.

Finding a buyer for Sancho requires a club to take a gamble on three things, (a) his lack of football in recent months (b) his high salary and (c) his perceived attitude problems which have seen him fall out with manager Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United linked with terminating Sancho deal

To find a club willing to pay Manchester United a transfer fee on top of accepting all three of those potential problems with the player, is a tall order.

This is why United have been linked with terminating Jadon Sancho’s deal, according to Sky Sports.

It is a strategy set to be considered by incoming investors Ineos, who see the value in clearing the decks and paying off unwanted players, rather than keeping them around.

Update on Sancho

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has been asked about how far along this is, and he insists Manchester United are going to do all they can to find a buyer first.

He explains that this would be ‘extremely costly and a last resort’.

Ornstein described United as ‘desperate’ to find a buyer for Sancho this coming month.

Our verdict on United’s most likely option on Sancho

United do have a major problem here. As Ornstein suggests, it would be highly expensive to pay off one of the club’s highest earners, who is still under contract until 2026.

But the problems we listed earlier makes it very unlikely a club will pay United fair value, if anything, to take him on.

Clubs will want a try before you buy, and United are more likely to agree a loan deal, and hope Sancho can recover his value and create a bigger market for the summer.

United may insist Sancho’s loan has an option or obligation to buy if he plays a certain number of games.

What the club do not want, is the prospect of Sancho returning for pre-season next summer, and this saga dragging on until the summer deadline day in August. A proper resolution needs to be put in place now.
