David de Gea will be very difficult for Manchester United to replace, warns John O’Shea

Manchester United’s defence kept a fourth clean sheet in a row in the win over Bournemouth.

This would not have been possible without a succession of saves from David de Gea in the second half, with United giving away a few too many chances.

De Gea had to make four saves in total to earn his clean sheet, and he has enjoyed a strong return to form this season.

It comes amid unease over his future, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

‘De Gea will be very difficult for Manchester United to replace’

De Gea could extend his contract but United want him to agree a wage cut. He is currently the highest paid player at the club.

BBC Sport reported: “The option for a shorter contract on reduced terms for the Spaniard has been raised.”

As it stands, De Gea is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign teams.

After his performance against Bournemouth, former United defender John O’Shea warned it will be difficult to replace the Spaniard.

O’Shea told MUTV’s post-match coverage: “Incredible, the problem is going to be replacing him.

“You don’t want to think about it. I know negotiations are ongoing. It’s going to be big shoes to fill.

“Enjoy him while we can. He’s playing so well. You saw it in the second half, incredible the way he gets that left hand out a few times. Fantastic saves.”

United’s intentions long-term in goal remain unclear. It would make sense to sign a younger goalkeeper long-term, but De Gea is playing so well, it would be very hard to break this side up.

A big decision awaits Erik ten Hag, and there is a good chance an agreement to suit all parties is found.
