Daley Blind admits Manchester United target Antony could leave Ajax
Manchester United are reported to be hoping to sign Ajax winger Antony this summer, with Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte reporting interest from the Red Devils this week.
Ajax are already set to lose Noussair Mazraoui on a free transfer to Bayern Munich, with Ryan Gravenberch expected to follow him to the German club.
Ten Hag’s replacement Alfred Schreuder could have his work cut out keeping the side together, with ex-Red Devils star Daley Blind admitting Antony could leave Ajax.
Antony could leave Ajax
In an interview with Bij Andy in de auto, reported by Voetball Primeur, former United star Daley Blind admitted Ajax have a tricky task to keep hold of their stars, and to stay competitive next season, suggesting Antony could leave.
He explains he believes Ajax would cash in on their top stars if the price is right, with a big offer impossible to resist, naming Antony as one they could lose. The Brazilian is in demand after scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists this season.
Blind said: “A few players are already leaving on a free transfer, so I don’t think Ajax will let players go that easily. You have to have a team next year that will compete again in the Champions League and for the title.
“If the main price is paid for Haller or Antony, then Ajax will accept it, but I don’t think Ajax wants to sell many players. I hope most of them just stay.”
Blind himself says he intends to stay, with one year remaining on his contract, although he waits to see what his new manager plans for him.
In an interview last week with Voetbal International, Ten Hag said he thought Ajax would make two or three big sales, although said two was the optimum number.
He said: “I think there will be three more big transfers this summer. That is indeed a loss in sporting terms, but then you as a club have received a hundred million euros, or perhaps more.
“The best scenario would be two big transfers, keep the rest, buy some and youth move up.”
This would not make it easy for United to land the players they reportedly want to. Gravenberch to Bayern may already count as one of the big transfers.
Their exits would make United extremely lucky to land Antony and defender Jurrien Timber, who is reported by The Mirror to be a top defensive target.
Blind’s comments indicate he believes it could be Haller or Antony – or both – who are sold to raise funds, which would indicate Timber may stay.
If Ajax receive big fees early for one or two of their stars, it will put them in a commanding position where they don’t need the money for the others, and decide to keep them to concentrate on next season. United need to act quickly, to avoid missing out.
