Potential new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim used to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s national team.
Less than 24 hours after Erik ten Hag was sacked, Manchester United are closing in on the appointment of his successor at Old Trafford.
United are one step away from hiring Ruben Amorim as manager, with the 39-year-old keen to make the move to Manchester.
Amorim has verbally agreed to join United and his appointment can be confirmed once the final details with Sporting Lisbon are ironed out.
The 39-year-old manager has been dominating Portuguese football with his Sporting side in recent years, but he only hung up his boots as a player in 2016.

What Cristiano Ronaldo used to call Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim is set to follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo by leaving Sporting to join United, only as a manager rather than a player.
During his playing days, Amorim actually played alongside Ronaldo in the Portugal national team, where he made 14 caps between 2010 and 2014.
It is no secret that Ronaldo did not get on with Ten Hag after he criticised the former United manager in his explosive interview in 2022.
However, given Ronaldo’s nickname for Amorim, it seems he has plenty of respect for Ten Hag’s potential successor.
As per BBC Sport, Portuguese football writer Marcus Alves describes Amorim as “Eloquent and outgoing.”
He continues: “Amorim is irresistible and dominates the words in such a way that Cristiano Ronaldo used to call him ‘poet’ in the national team.”
Ruben Amorim is the right choice for Man United
Ineos should be praised for how quick they have acted in the managerial search – United have waited and delayed before and it only made matters worse.
There was a clear pattern with four similar managers identified by Ineos, but Amorim stands out above the rest as the right option for United.
Bruno Fernandes agrees Amorim is ready to step up to a big club after dominating Portuguese football with Sporting over the last few seasons.
He will bring fresh ideas and a forward-thinking style of play to Old Trafford. His record with transfers, improving players and working with youth also makes him the perfect candidate.
The deal is not done yet, but United are inching closer and closer to getting it done.
