Rio Ferdinand revealed that former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo would aim a cheeky dig at three club legends during his time at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo shot to superstardom during his first spell at Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson signed him from Sporting CP in 2003.

The 39-year-old Portuguese forward enjoyed incredible success under Sir Alex Ferguson, including lifting the first of his five Ballon d’Or awards as a United player.

During his first run at the Red Devils, Ronaldo lifted three Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, an FA Cup and two League Cups.

Ronaldo left United for the first time in 2009 and went on to complete a world record move at the time to Real Madrid, with the Red Devils securing an £80m fee for him.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner made a blockbuster return to Old Trafford in 2021 after he left Serie A side Juventus.

Ronaldo made an impact in his first season back at United, with the Portugal captain scoring 24 times in 39 appearances across all competitions in the 2021-22 season.

However, the United legend had a high-profile falling out with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag before he made his exit from Old Trafford in 2022.

Ferdinand on Man Utd legend Ronaldo

Rio Ferdinand linked up with Cristiano Ronaldo on the former Manchester United winger’s YouTube channel and opened up about the Al Nassr superstar.

The 45-year-old former United defender recalled how Red Devils players would tease Ronaldo if the Portugal skipper was on the losing team in training.

Recalling their time at Old Trafford, Ferdinand said players would say to Ronaldo: “S**t No 7, you’re a s**t No 7.”

Ronaldo, who was handed the legendary United No 7 shirt by Sir Alex Ferguson, would hold his own against his former United teammates’ playful teasing.

According to Ferdinand, the Real Madrid and United legend would use David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best in his response back to his teammates.

He added: “He would say, ‘Did Beckham score these many goals?’ ‘Did George Best score these many goals?’

“‘Did [Eric] Cantona score these many goals?’ He used to go crazy.”

Ronaldo in Man Utd training

United legend Nicky Butt once highlighted Ronaldo’s work ethic after recalling how Ferguson was forced to tell the former Juventus player to leave training.

“He was the last to leave the building,” he said in the book ‘Viva Ronaldo!: The Second Coming of Cristiano,’ as per The Sun in 2021.

“In fact, you couldn’t get him off the training pitch as he worked relentlessly on his techniques, as we all walking off he was carrying a bag of balls to work on those techniques.

“We would be having lunch in the canteen or getting ready to go home and you could hear the voice of Sir Alex bellowing across the training fields at two or three o’clock in the afternoon, shouting at Cristiano that it was time to get off the pitch as ‘we have a game in two days – enough now!’”
