‘Completely sour’ – Gary Neville’s ‘toxic’ suspicion of Man United has now been confirmed

Gary Neville has not been afraid to speak out on the deep-lying issues at Manchester United over the past decade.

The former Manchester United captain, now turned pundit, has often spoken passionately about what has gone wrong at Old Trafford.

Ineos have stamped down on team leaks, while Ruben Amorim has had no tolerance for players who weren’t giving maximum effort.

There have been several concerning reports about the dressing room atmosphere at United over the last few years. Marcus Rashford’s attitude was a concern according to club insiders, but he is certainly not the only player who has kicked up a fuss.

Amorim cast out five players this pre-season to make sure his squad was exactly how he wanted it, and Luke Shaw has now given some insight into the toxicity of previous years.

Luke Shaw reveals ‘toxic’ atmosphere at Man United

Luke Shaw spoke out in support of Amorim at the end of last season following the defeat in the Europa League final. He backed him as the right man to lead the Red Devils forward.

Even in pre-season, Shaw has raved about Amorim and the changes he has made during his short time in charge.

Speaking to BBC, Shaw revealed that the environment at United has been “toxic” in recent years, but Amorim is working to change that.

“It’s not hard to see from the outside what it’s been like,” said Shaw.

“A lot of the time I’ve been here over the last few years it’s been extremely negative.

“It can be quite toxic, the environment, it’s not healthy at all. We need an environment that’s healthy, that’s positive, that’s got good energy and happiness. When you have all those things, you feel free and you express yourself more.

“Ruben brings demands. Mentality is a big thing. He talks a lot about it.

“He demands 100% and doesn’t want anything less. If someone’s doing 85-90%, it’s not enough. I think, especially this year, if you’re not doing the right things, you won’t play.”

Gary Neville has suspected toxicity at Man United for years

It will hardly come as a surprise to United fans that the environment at the club has been toxic in recent years – fans have seen it themselves in the club’s performances and results.

Managers have come and gone, as have star players. Back in 2022, club legend Gary Neville spoke about United having a “sour” dressing room.

As quoted by Manchester Evening News, Neville said: “Something has disrupted that dressing room, they’ve put the wrong ingredient into the dish and it’s made it go completely sour.

“That’s the bit that has to be dealt with because these players, they’re not as bad as that points tally that they’ve got on that board.

“They’re better than that. There is something deeper that is wrong in that dressing room that’s making them play the way they are and making them get results they’re getting.”

A year later, Neville highlighted “cultural toxicity” at United, as per OneFootball. It seems he wasn’t far from the truth, with Shaw revealing that the environment at Carrington has been a negative one in recent years.
