Club hailed for £43m Manchester United deal while signing £5m replacement

Fabrizio Ravanelli has hailed Inter Milan for selling Andre Onana to Premier League giants Manchester United and then bringing in the ‘magical’ Yann Sommer as his replacement.

While Yann Sommer has been a picture of consistency between the sticks at the Serie A leaders, Andre Onana is anything but in the colours of Manchester United.

His Old Trafford career has been a story of ‘one step forward and two steps back’ so far, high-profile blunders against the likes of Bayern Munich, Brentford and Galatasaray undermining the progress he had made in other – almost solely domestic – fixtures.

And Fabrizio Ravanelli, the former Italy, Middlesbrough and Juventus striker, has been left applauding a deal which saw Inter bring in £43 million for Onana before arguably signing an upgrade in former Bayern Munich glovesman Sommer to the tune of just £5 million.

Andre Onana yet to convince at Manchester United

“They found a magical goalkeeper in Sommer,” Ravanelli tells TV Play on Calciomercato. “A bit of luck, then, always helps.

“Just think that last season the Nerazzurri sold Onana, considered one of the best in Europe, for 50 million euros. And, today, he is unpresentable. And then (Inter) signed a fantastic goalkeeper (Sommer).

“Inter don’t make a mistake with a purchase. They know how to choose and are deservedly at the top of the table.”

Erik ten Hag has spoken out in support of Onana in the aftermath of that Galatasaray horror-show, pointing out that only Newcastle’s Nick Pope has more than his five clean sheets in the Premier League this season.

Altay Bayindir waiting in the wings

Onana’s potential departure during the African Cup of Nations in the New Year, meanwhile, will open the door for Altay Bayindir to establish himself in Erik ten Hag’s XI, the Turkish international yet to make his Red Devils debut but very highly regarded behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Fabrizio Romano, meanwhile, is dismissing reports suggesting that United could turn to AC Milan’s Mike Maignan as concerns over Onana continue to swirl.
