Chris Sutton says ‘dependable’ Man Utd star was crucial to Brentford win, he deserves more credit

Chris Sutton was full of praise for one Manchester United star for his performance against Brentford and it wasn’t Rasmus Hojlund or Alejandro Garnacho.

The pressure was eased slightly on Erik ten Hag as his tactical switch led Manchester United to a comeback victory over Brentford.

A disaster looked likely when Ethan Pinnock headed in the opener just before the break, sparking wild protests from Ten Hag and his players as Matthijs de Ligt had been ordered off the field for the proceeding corner.

However, the manager made some tweaks to his system and clearly fired his players up during the break as they were level within two minutes of the restart,

Alejandro Garnacho fired in a perfectly controlled volley from Marcus Rashford’s cross and then Rasmus Hojlund bagged the winner with a deft chip for his first goal of the campaign.

The two forwards will steal the plaudits, and scored very highly in UIF’s player ratings, but Chris Sutton moved to pick out Jonny Evans for praise.

Chris Sutton labels Jonny Evans a ‘rock’ for his display vs Brentford

Speaking to the BBC during the game, Sutton on Evans: “Jonny Evans has been a rock at the back for Man Utd.

“He was brilliant in his last game and he’s so dependable. Brentford have hardly had a shot in this second half.

“They really smothered Brentford and didn’t let them play. They went up a level in terms of intensity. The second goal was important for Rasmus Hojlund and they saw the game through comfortably.

“A lot has been made about what has gone on at the club and whether they are making progress, but the second half was a good sign and that’s the level United have to maintain from now on.”

Jonny Evans deserves a lot of credit

United have once again been bombarded with injuries at the back and once again Evans has been forced into the fray.

When the 36-year-old returned to Old Trafford in 2023 he must have thought he’d been in for a comfortable time but it turns out he’s been relied upon much more than expected.

Yet, despite his advancing years, Evans is still going strong and putting in remarkably assured performances.

He’s not an unsung hero as the United faithful chanted his name loud and proud on Saturday but he certainly deserves more credit for the level he is continuing to operate at.
