Manchester United are developing a knack for finding wonderkids at Arsenal but one signing from the North London club has been cut loose after less than a year.
Chido Obi started the trail last summer when he rejected the advances of some of the best clubs in England and Europe to sign for Man Utd.
Ayden Heaven followed that path in January and it would be fair to say that both those transfers have worked out brilliantly for the club.
However, just around the time when Chido Obi signed last summer, another youngster from Arsenal was signed, albeit with less fanfare.
Man Utd have already confirmed his release less than a year after he joined, thereby ending the Arsenal connection to Obi.
Man Utd confirm Hubert Graczyk release
United’s raid for excellent youth prospects went into overdrive in the first transfer window under Ineos last summer when they signed multiple prospects.
Chido Obi was the headliner, but the likes of Samuel Lusale, Sekou Kone, and Hubert Graczyk also arrived from Premier League academies.
Obi has started to make good on his vast potential, while Lusale has impressed in limited appearances for the U18s, but Graczyk’s Man Utd journey is already over.
Man Utd confirmed their squad update recently and Graczyk’s name was among the unfortunate few who didn’t have their contract renewed.
Graczyk was joined by Jack Kingdon, Sam Murray, and James Nolan, to name a few, but since the former Arsenal goalkeeper joined United just last summer, his exit is a bit of a surprise.
The 6’3″ goalkeeper made just three appearances for the U21s in Premier League 2 but conceded 11 goals in those games.
That wouldn’t have helped his standing at the club and combined with United’s burgeoning goalkeeping ranks, Graczyk might have become an outcast next season.
Graczyk signed for the wrong role
United might have been looking at Graczyk’s signing as a short-term one from the get-go because they were getting ready to loan both Elyh Harrison and Radek Vitek.
Harrison and Vitek shone on loan while Graczyk was effectively signed as the backup goalkeeper for the academy sides, a role that was never going to allow him to shine.
He turned 22 in February 2025 so the time for a senior breakthrough at a Premier League club has already passed him by, so taking a chance to train with Man Utd for a season might have been appealing to him.
Now is the time for him to take on a first-team role lower down the pyramid and bet on himself to start climbing up the footballing ranks again.
A player doesn’t spend years at Arsenal and United’s youth system if he doesn’t have any potential.
