Bryan Mbeumo could play four different positions at Man United in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1

Manchester United are hoping that Bryan Mbeumo becomes the second major signing of the summer window.

The Red Devils have already confirmed the arrival of Matheus Cunha in a £62.5 million deal after triggering the release clause of the Wolves star.

But Ineos are certainly not done there, and United submitted a £45m bid for Bryan Mbeumo this week as Ruben Amorim looks to add another attacker to his squad.

The first bid fell well short of Brentford’s £60m valuation of Mbeumo, but United are expected to return with an improved bid with reports that add-ons will be key to securing Mbeumo this summer.

There is huge pressure on Amorim to hit the ground running in 2025/26, and the Portuguese head coach clearly believes Bryan Mbeumo will strengthen his side in multiple ways.

How Bryan Mbeumo fits into Ruben Amorim’s style of play

Since arriving at Carrington, Amorim has made it clear he won’t change formation after being brought in by Ineos to implement his 3-4-2-1 system.

Ineos are now tasked with bringing in players that suit that style of play and Mbeumo has played in very similar systems at Brentford.

According to The Telegraph, Mbeumo’s “flexibility” appeals to Amorim, who has often experimented by putting players in several different positions over the season.

It is pointed out that Mbeumo has played in four different positions at Brentford – right winger, striker, a right-sided No. 10 and a right wing-back. Experience across those positions should help him adapt to Amorim’s demands.

Mbeumo will likely start as a No.10 at United, with Cunha expected to start on the left of a central striker and Mbeumo on the right. However, his experience at wing-back could also prove very useful.

Bryan Mbeumo could fix three problems for Man United

It quickly became clear to Amorim that United will need to recruit heavily this summer to make his 3-4-2-1 style of play work with several players struggling to adapt.

A striker is a top priority for United this summer but with both Cunha and Mbeumo capable of playing up front it should ease the goal concerns.

Additionally, it has been reported that Amad Diallo will be used as a wing-back in 2025/26 but Mbeumo’s ability to cover at wing-back means the 22-year-old could also get a chance to play higher up in a No.10 role.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho are all expected to leave, which leaves Amorim with very few options on the right of attack. That will be Mbeumo’s primary position at Old Trafford, but versatility is never a bad thing.
