Bruno Fernandes tells United wonderkid Anthony Elanga to keep pushing
It was Anthony Elanga’s decisive strike that allowed Manchester United to break free of the shackles against Brentford.
After a tepid first 45 minutes, United could only improve in the second half and it was through our Swedish youngster that the deadlock was broken.
Constantly on the move and making runs across the defensive line, Brentford wing-back Mads Roerslev didn’t know whether to follow Elanga’s run or attempt to catch the youngster offside.
With Cristiano Ronaldo coming deep and drawing the Bees’ centre-backs out of position, Elanga had the intelligence to utilise the space to devastating effect.
It was a great ball by Fred, but the 19-year-old showed great technical and physical qualities to first control the ball that was fizzed into them, and then have the athleticism to nod the ball past Jonas Loessl.
Making successive Premier League starts for the first time in his career, Elanga is in the midst of a purple patch which is seeing him graduate from being a talented youngster to an established first team man.
After grasping his opportunity under Rangnick, the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are now faced with the task of ousting United’s number 36, who received high praise from the club’s fans for his performance last night.
The healthy competition that challenging for places brings can only be a good thing for the German coach.
But with United facing a pivotal clash against West Ham on Saturday in the quest for Champions League qualification, Elanga, whose confidence will no doubt be sky-high should be a nailed on starter.
The Swedish under-21 international comes across as a humble youngster who is ready to work incredibly hard to establish himself as a big part of this Manchester United side.
Eager to keep his teammate grounded and focused, Bruno Fernandes has sent the wonderkid a message following his goalscoring exploits.
Captaining the side last night with Harry Maguire on the bench, Fernandes is keen to use his leadership and experience to help nurture the club’s talented youngsters.
As well as posting an Instagram story about Anthony Elanga’s ‘deserved’ success, the Portuguese international also loved Marcus Rashford getting back on the goalscoring trail.
With Fernandes back to his imperious best and all three of our goals last night coming from academy graduates, United’s number 18 words of wisdom will no doubt do wonders for our youngsters confidence.
