Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has stepped up throughout Portugal’s European Championship qualifying campaign.
Just getting to World Cup 2022 was a nightmare for Portugal. They did so via a play-off against North Macedonia, which most had expected to be a showdown with Italy.
These bad vibes preceded a difficult World Cup for the team, where they were knocked out by Morocco. This time around they have left nothing to chance.
Bruno Fernandes has led Portugal throughout the campaign, helping them win all 10 of their qualifying matches, to reach the finals with a 100 per cent record for the first time in their history.

Bruno Fernandes does it again
Portugal had already qualified before last night’s game with Iceland. In front of their home fans, they were determined to make it 10 wins from 10, and went with a strong line-up.
This included Joao Felix and Cristiano Ronaldo, but yet again it was Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes who stole the show.
Fernandes scored an opening goal in the first half from outside the box, arrowed low into the bottom corner, before Ricardo Horta added a second to make it 2-0 after half-time, with Ronaldo providing the assist.
It is Fernandes who can consider himself unlucky not to have an assist to his name. He created a staggering six chances, more than any player on the pitch. He also completed 90 per cent of his passes.
Ronaldo was unable to add to his all-time record 128 international goals.
Fernandes’ international break is now complete, he will return to Carrington. Diogo Dalot was not part of the squad, due to the birth of his child last week.
Fernandes record for Portugal
Bruno Fernandes now has 18 goals in 62 international games for Portugal. A third of these have come in this international qualifying campaign.
That is six goals scored in 10 games, plus a further seven assists, making a total 13 goal contributions.
Cristiano Ronaldo led the team for goals with 10 in total, but with just the one assist.
Manchester United will need Fernandes back in top form for the upcoming stretch of games, featuring two tough away trips against Everton and Galatasaray when club football returns.
