Bruno Fernandes has had an amazing start to his Manchester United career since joining the club from Sporting Lisbon in January.

The midfielder played a starring role in United’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City last week, setting up Anthony Martial’s goal with a clever free-kick.

Fernandes now has two goals and three assists in the Premier League, and he endeared himself to the United supporters even further during the closing stages of the derby.

Following a verbal altercation on the touchline, Fernandes put his finger to his mouth and told Pep Guardiola to be quiet.

The incident certainly went down well with United fans, and he revealed that the City boss had disrespected him.

Silencing Guardiola

“I talked about this with some friends and some people think ‘Pep won everything, who is Bruno to do this to him?’, but I think it is about respect,” Fernandes told Sky Sports [via Goal].

“Now, I think outside of the pitch I don’t do this again if I am on the pitch now.

“But, at that moment the words he told me made me mad, and on the pitch I am a little bit nervous, it is the kind of player I am.

“I have respect for Pep and what he won, and what he did for football because he changed some mentalities in football.

“But, at that moment he didn’t deserve my respect at that moment on the pitch.”

A strong character

Fernandes has brought his amazing skills and creativity to the club, but he also has a lot of other qualities.

The 25-year-old is a natural leader who demands high standards from his team-mates and will always give everything on the pitch.

United have been lacking players with a strong character over the last few years and never really replaced Roy Keane in midfield.

However, his ‘shushing’ gesture towards Guardiola showed that United have signed a big personality as well as an amazing footballer.

He is fast-becoming a cult hero at Old Trafford and this sort of behaviour is only going to enhance his reputation.
