Manchester United are the only English team left in the Europa League after a dramatic night in the competition.

United made light work of La Liga high fliers Real Betis. It was another side in green and white who sprung an upset.

Portuguese side Sporting beat Premier League leaders Arsenal at The Emirates, winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra-time.

United could have been drawn against Arsenal in the quarter-finals, with no restrictions on teams from the same country facing each other. But this is no longer an issue with the Gunners eliminated.

Bruno Fernandes reacts

Bruno Fernandes joined Manchester United from Sporting in January 2020 and has been a major hit for the Red Devils since signing.

He is still close to many members of the squad who he also knows from the Portugal national team, including midfielder Pedro ‘Pote’ Goncalves, who has been lauded as Sporting’s new Fernandes.

Pote scored a spectacular equaliser at The Emirates, scoring from inside the centre circle to lob Aaron Ramsdale.

Fernandes reached out to the midfielder on Instagram to laud his incredible goal, writing: “But what is this” with a series of emojis expressing his admiration.

Manchester United could yet end up facing Sporting, with the draw for the quarter-finals set to be held on Friday at midday.

Fernandes scored and assisted in United’s quarter-final first leg victory over Real Betis – just not quite as spectacularly as Pote’s 46-yard stunner.
