If you think Facundo Pellistri has had to wait a long time for his Manchester United debut, it’s nothing on Tom Heaton’s wait for his first start.

Heaton had made his official United debut last year as a substitute against Young Boys.

But last night was his ‘full debut’, named in the starting line up in a Manchester United shirt for the first time in his career in a competitive game.

Heaton got the nod over new signing Jack Butland, with David de Gea rested.

Heaton keeps clean sheet

Heaton stepped into the side convincingly, looking assured at the back to help his side keep a clean sheet and reach the next round.

This is Heaton’s second spell at the club. The first time he had Edwin van der Sar in front of him, and this time he has had David de Gea blocking his path.

More recently it was stand-in Martin Dubravka who stood in his path. He has since returned to Newcastle, opening the path for Heaton’s full debut last night.

Speaking after the game, Dubravka told the club website: “Opportunities have been difficult to come by.

“It was slightly frustrating not to play in the previous round, I had a little injury – bad timing – and Martin [Dubravka] played well in that game.

“But, thankfully, I was on the teamsheet tonight and, hopefully, there will be more to come.”

His debut was hailed by both David de Gea and Bruno Fernandes, who reached out on Instagram to congratulate the veteran goalkeeper.
