Bruno Fernandes is 'extremely highly-rated' by Erik ten Hag

Bruno Fernandes was recently signed to a new contract by Manchester United, even despite this sitting in an interim stretch of time before Ralf Rangnick takes up his job as new manager.

What if Ten Hag does not want Fernandes, some asked. Fear not. The Telegraph report Fernandes ‘is extremely highly-rated by Ten Hag.’

You would have hoped United would have had the sense to check with Ten Hag, before signing Fernandes to a contract extension. We will give them the benefit of the doubt and assume these talks did take place, rather than it simply being a stroke of luck.

But with United, you never know with contracts. Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Andreas Pereira are among the odd extensions granted by the Red Devils in recent seasons, without much thought to whether they would actually play in the first team.

Your Club's SURPRISE Star This Season

Bruno Fernandes is ‘extremely highly-rated’ by Erik ten Hag

It makes a lot of sense Fernandes is ‘extremely highly-rated’ by Ten Hag. This week the Portugal international scored his 50th goal for the club since joining in early 2020.

He also has provided 39 assists, and this season he has created more chances than any Premier League player.

Fernandes’ game can also be a little rough round the edges, often when he does not have enough creative support around him, and Ten Hag is an ideal coach to help him improve.

The 27-year-old is likely going to continue to be a key player under Ten Hag, and he will be thrilled the incoming manager is a big admirer.

The report in The Telegraph notes that United need more creative players to help Fernandes out, and this is likely to be addressed this summer, with striker and defender among the positions the club need to strengthen.

Fernandes and international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo have not linked up as much as they would have liked, with Fernandes supplying only one Premier League assist to the number 7.

He may find a better connection with one of United’s incoming new strikers, while Ronaldo is expected to stay for another year, they should improve together.

Fernandes’ new contract will run until 2026 with an option for a further year. Hopefully Ten Hag can ensure he and United win some silverware during this time, with United already five years into a trophy drought.
