Manchester United confirm Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has officially signed a new contract.

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo had claimed a week ago that an agreement was very close.

Now the agreement is official, with Fernandes extending his deal until 2026 with an extra option to extend until 2027.

Fernandes says better days lie around the corner for United, telling the club website: “There is so much more that I want to achieve here, and I know that is the same for the rest of the squad and staff. More than anything, we want to give the fans the success that they deserve.

“We have shared some great moments over the last years, but the best is yet to come from myself and this team.”

The timing of the announcement has been viewed as a little odd, with the club not yet appointing a new manager.

In theory, it is best for all contract decisions to be left to the new incoming boss.

But Fernandes’ contract has been in the pipeline for more than a year now, with United keen to put the midfielder on improved terms.

With 49 goals since he joined the club in 2020, United wanted to reward the midfielder’s strong performances.

Fernandes’ previous deal ran was not expiring any time soon (2025 with an option to 2026) so there was no desperate need to do this now, but when you have the opportunity to lock down a key player for even longer, its often advisable to do so.

As part of the agreement, Fernandes has secured improved wages. The Athletic report the new agreement would double his salary from £120,000 to £240,000 per week, bringing him in line with the club’s top earners to reflect his outstanding performance.

John Murtough, football director, said: “Everyone is well aware of Bruno’s importance to Manchester United. His goals and assists record is phenomenal and he has performed remarkably consistently since he joined the club.

“Bruno’s work-rate, dedication and fantastic attitude are exactly what we want from a Manchester United player. He is the ultimate professional with many fantastic attributes to drive the high standards required to play for this great club.

“Bruno, like everyone across the football club, remains hugely ambitious and determined to deliver sustained success on the pitch to get us back to challenging for titles.”
