Bruno Fernandes is having his best individual season for Manchester United, but once the curtains are drawn on this campaign, questions around his future will be asked.
This season, Bruno Fernandes is set to break assist records both in the Premier League and across Europe’s top five leagues.
Manchester United sitting third in the league is mainly down to the 19 assists Fernandes has racked up in the Premier League alone this season.
Along with talk of winning the Premier League Player of the Year, Fernandes is being mentioned in Ballon d’Or conversations. This is hardly shocking, with Fernandes’ performances among the very best in the world.
But to win that award, trophies play a major role.

Bruno Fernandes gets another assist – the record is almost his!
Do you think he could get two in the next game vs Liverpool?!
Bruno Fernandes demanding that Manchester United show ambition
Paul Pogba has claimed Fernandes needs to win trophies to be considered for the Ballon d’Or, despite his performances deserving recognition.
This is the reason that Fernandes’ future is being debated, with his career beginning to run out of time, and his trophy haul not fitting how good he is.
According to The Telegraph, Fernandes is now demanding that United give him assurances over the club’s ambitions.
United are determined to keep Fernandes and have told him, but the club captain won’t stay unless he feels confident he can accomplish his goals, which is to win the Premier League and Champions League.
If Ineos can’t convince Fernandes, his £56m release clause could prove a bargain for a club in Europe keen to add the best player in the world right now.
United’s interest in Aurelien Tchouameni and others is the kind of business to convince Fernandes.
What does Bruno Fernandes have to do in 2026 to challenge for the Ballon d’Or?
Win the World Cup? Win the Premier League POTY? Break the assist record?
Fernandes asking the same questions Wayne Rooney did in 2012
United’s best player doubting the ambitions at Old Trafford is not a new story with Fernandes, as it happened with Wayne Rooney 16 years ago.
As reported by The Guardian in 2010, Rooney wanted to leave the club, doubting the ambition to attract top-level players and win big trophies.
Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson had a public spat, with both talking to the media.
Speaking at the time, Rooney said, “During meetings in August, I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world”.
This sounds similar to the narrative being described around Fernandes’ future, and it’s just right for such talented players to demand that the club matches their ambitions.
Returning to the Champions League is vital for this, but Ineos now needs to make it so convincing for Fernandes that next season a serious title charge can be mounted.
