Brazilian talent now unlikely to leave, but Man Utd may have already found a more sensible target

Manchester United appear to be in the market for another left wing-back this summer, just months after signing Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu.

Ruben Amorim enjoyed great success at Sporting while using a 3-4-2-1 system.

Amorim immediately brought that system to Old Trafford, but the Manchester United squad wasn’t exactly built for playing with wing-backs.

Summer signing Noussair Mazraoui is more of a traditional full-back, and Luke Shaw may now be viewed as a left-sided centre-back under Amorim.

United invested in Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu in January, luring the Dane to Old Trafford from Lecce.

Dorgu has shown potential, but United are looking at signing Pervis Estupinan from Brighton and Hove Albion, and other left wing-backs could be on the radar.

Manchester United target Cuiabano set for Botafogo stay

United looked into signing Botafogo’s Cuiabano earlier in the window, having been impressed with the Brazilian wing-back.

Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor is on United’s radar, and teammate Cuiabano has also caught the eye.

Reports in June suggested that Cuiabano was close to joining Nottingham Forest, but that deal won’t be happening now.

Globo Esporte claim that deals with Forest as well as Brighton and Hove Albion have collapsed.

The plan is now for Cuiabano to see out 2025 as a Botafogo player, with Davide Ancelotti looking to inspire another Copa Libertadores win.

Cuiabano is happy to stay at Botafogo, but European clubs continue to pursue him, and a 2026 move could be in the pipeline.

United will surely continue to keep tabs on Cuiabano for a potential move, though much will depend on whether a new left wing-back option arrives this summer.

Pervis Estupinan makes more sense than Cuiabano for Manchester United

Reports on Tuesday suggested United have held talks to sign Estupinan, with the Brighton ace potentially available this summer.

Any deal for Estupinan this summer would surely rule United out of the race for Cuiabano in 2026, and a move for the Ecuadorian may actually make more sense.

United already have a talented, young left wing-back in Dorgu, and will be looking to develop him into a star.

Adding another player with a similar profile just wouldn’t make sense, whereas a more experienced left wing-back, such as Estupinan, could be the perfect player to guide Dorgu.

Estupinan would cost more, and United are working with a restricted budget this summer, but the blend of adding his Premier League know-how to the potential of Dorgu could be ideal.
