Borussia Dortmund boss addresses Jadon Sancho Champions League performance, makes position clear

Edin Terzic has moved to defend Jadon Sancho but admits his recent performance in the Champions League wasn’t good enough.

Jadon Sancho is back at Borussia Dortmund on loan from Manchester United following his spectacular fallout with Erik ten Hag in September.

Dortmund could only draw the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie away at PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday despite taking the lead.

Sancho made his fourth start since returning to Germany against PSV but didn’t make an impact before being hooked in the 68th minute. His display didn’t impress the German media.

The 23-year-old picked up an assist in his second Dortmund debut but has failed to register a goal contribution since as his struggle for form continues.

Edin Terzic moves to defend Jadon Sancho

However, Dortmund boss Edin Terzic moved to defend the winger even if he did concede his display wasn’t his best.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Terzic said: “With Jadon, it is always good to have him around.

“Inside the team, inside the group, and also inside the squad on a matchday because Jadon is capable of making special things happen.

“He didn’t have his best performance today, like us all, and he knows that he is able to play better football than today.

“This is what we are going to work on, to get him back on this level every three days when needed.

“But he is full of joy, and we are really happy and pleased that he is around.”

A worrying trend

If returning to the club where he made his name at can’t get Sancho back to his best then it is hard to see what can.

The incident with Ten Hag can be pointed towards as a key factor but, in reality, Sancho has never hit the heights he reached at Signal Iduna Park since leaving for Manchester.

The £250k-a-week man is showing little signs of improvement and it poses serious questions over his future.

Sancho is unlikely to play for United again – at least with Ten Hag in charge – but who will be willing to buy him if he is playing so poorly? Dortmund might not even want him back on loan at this rate.

United are staring down the barrel of another significant loss on a huge transfer fee and Sancho at a wasted career.
