Boca Juniors and River Plate set to battle to sign former Manchester United striker

Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is at the centre of a transfer battle between Argentina’s biggest clubs and bitter rivals.

A year after leaving Manchester United, Edinson Cavani is set for another big decision on his future.

Cavani has spent the last season at Valencia, scoring seven goals for the club in a difficult season which saw Los Che narrowly avoid relegation.

The Uruguayan has another year left on his contract at Valencia, but amid a mediocre scoring season, the Spanish side’s financial troubles, and rising interest in his signature, there is a strong chance he moves on this summer.

Edinson Cavani wanted by Boca Juniors and River Plate

Argentine giants Boca Juniors and River Plate are both showing interest in Cavani, 36, and view him as a huge attraction, even with his powers waning.

Boca Juniors made enquiries for Cavani during his first season at Manchester United, ESPN reported.

He admitted to TyC Sports that he was homesick in England amid the pandemic and was attracted by returning to South America, that talks did take place with Boca, but then chose to stick around at United and sign a one-year extension.

Last summer he signed with Valencia as he wanted to stay in Europe ahead of the World Cup. Now he is set to be presented with another option to move continents.

Bola VIP report Boca are set to try again for Cavani, believing he can strengthen their Copa Libertadores campaign.

Soy Xeneize report Boca could offer around 2 million Euros for Cavani, knowing Valencia could have to accept a low fee, because he could sign a pre-contract agreement from January.

However, Soy De River reports bitter rivals River Plate are confident they have a strong case to sign ‘El Matador’ and plan to upset Boca Juniors by making a play for the Uruguayan.

Urgente24 also reports River are keen on Cavani, and believe Uruguayan legend and former River star Enzo Francescoli can persuade him to join as they have strong relations.

It would be great to see Cavani performing his ‘archer’ celebration in front of one of football’s most passionate fanbases, whoever he chooses.

Boca Juniors former Manchester United connection

Edinson Cavani briefly crossed over with Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero at Manchester United in the 2020/21 season.

By that stage both players had been ostracised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so Cavani never played alongside them, but he did train with Rojo at Carrington.

Rojo and Romero are currently starring for Boca Juniors, and there was a special guest at La Bombonera this week too.

Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera fulfilled a childhood dream by watching a Boca Juniors game from the stands, as a special guest of former teammate Rojo.

He told AS: “I am a bit crazy with Boca and some nights I would stay until 2 or 3 in the morning to see Riquelme.”

He did rule out joining Boca, however, adding: “I am almost 34 years old, contract in Spain and a family that is not very in favor of coming here.”
