Birmingham City have agreed a fee with Manchester United to re-sign Netherlands winger Tahith Chong on a permanent deal.

Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier in the week that the Championship side were in ‘advanced talks’ to sign the 22-year-old.

The Athletic are now reporting that the Red Devils have agreed a fee with the Blues for the sale of the former Feyenoord youngster.

Despite fellow West Midlands outfit West Bromwich Albion being interested in signing the tricky forward, Chong looks set to re-join the St. Andrew’s side.

Chong spent a period on loan at Birmingham last season, making 20 Championship appearances under Lee Bowyer, but he had a four-month injury lay-off after undergoing groin surgery.

The former Netherlands Under-21 international did feature under Erik ten Hag during pre-season, but Chong hasn’t formed part of any of the twenty-time league champions’ four Premier League matchday squads, and the Reds clearly feel this is the right time to sell.

With Chong’s contract set to expire in the summer, the Reds triggered a 12-month extension to ensure he didn’t leave the club on a free transfer, similar to his former Manchester United teammate Dylan Levitt who re-joined Dundee United earlier in the summer having spent last season on loan with the Tangerines.

Chong has been at United since the age of 16, joining from Feyenoord’s academy. He has previously had loan spells at Werder Bremen and Club Bruges.

United’s number 44 looks set to reunite with Hannibal Mejbri who has joined John Eustace’s Birmingham side on a season-long loan and made his Blues debut after coming off the bench against Norwich City on Tuesday night.

Chong has made 16 first team appearances for the Reds, the last of which came in the Europa League in August 2020.
