Manchester United and Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko has admitted that he played in two key positions early in his playing career before transitioning away from them.

Benjamin Sesko netted seven times and registered one assist in 23 matches across all competitions for Manchester United in the 2025-26 campaign at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old United forward arrived at the Premier League last summer under the reign of Ruben Amorim, with the Red Devils paying an initial fee of £66.3m.

Sesko has had a mixed first season at Old Trafford so far and the former RB Leipzig star has been adapting to the demands of playing in the Premier League.

The Slovenia international has been dropped from the Man Utd starting XI under Michael Carrick’s first five Premier League matches as interim head coach.

Man Utd ace Benjamin Sesko explains why he initially played as a shot-stopper in his career

Despite not starting for Manchester United in recent weeks, Benjamin Sesko has had a major impact for the Red Devils under Michael Carrick’s reign at Old Trafford.

Sesko netted the injury-time winner for Man Utd against Fulham earlier this month before he scored a stunning injury-time equaliser against West Ham last week.

The Slovenian forward appeared on United’s official podcast and Sesko revealed that he initially followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a shot-stopper.

“He [my dad] was a goalkeeper,” he said on Inside Carrington, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“First, he was a player and then he switched to basketball a little bit. And then he switched again to football.

“He was a goalkeeper and I started, as well, as a goalkeeper when I was a really young age.

“But then I said, one game, I remember I looked at my father in the middle of the game and said: ‘Father, this is so boring. I don’t have anything to do in the goal.’

“It was hard for me to see people, like my teammates, playing up there and I couldn’t score a goal.”

Benjamin Sesko tried out another position after his shot-stopping stint before becoming the striker he is now

Sesko has become synonymous with his current role as a striker, but the former RB Leipzig striker was deployed as a centre-back early in his career as well.

“I like doing something,” he added.

“There were also times, when I was a goalkeeper, I took the ball and went, like, through [the] whole pitch and then scored a goal!

“So, it has been a nice journey. And then I started as a centre-back and then I went up to striker.

“I think I was 12 or 13 then, something like this. That was the age that I just became a striker and I stayed there.”

United are fourth in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are five points behind third-place Aston Villa ahead of their next match against Everton.

The Red Devils will visit Goodison Park on 23rd February, with the Premier League clash against Everton slated for an 8pm kick-off time in the UK.
