Benfica decline option for Pereira or Martial amid Manchester United swap for Nunez hopes

Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica, Talksport reported last week.

But hopes to lower the potential fee by including a player in a swap deal, have not yet tempted the Portuguese club.

The Mirror reported at the weekend that Andreas Pereira was set to be offered as a makeweight in a move.

Pereira’s proposed switch to Flamengo had recently fallen through, where he remains on loan until the end of the month.

Swap for Nunez falls flat

Benfica outlet Terceiro Anel report United wanted to offer around 75 million Euros (£64 million), plus a player, to try and tempt Benfica into a deal.

But the cash plus player swap for Nunez is not moving ahead, at present, as Benfica do not like the players being proposed.

The report states that despite Benfica’s desire to strengthen the midfield, Pereira is not of interest to the Portuguese club.

Neither the Benfica board or new manager Roger Schmidt are attracted by the option to sign Pereira.

The outlet report Anthony Martial‘s name was also put forward in discussions – but neither Benfica or Martial himself were said to be keen.

Added competition

Nunez is a player in demand after scoring 34 goals in all competitions this past season.  The Athletic report United are among the front runners for his signature.

The Independent claim Liverpool are considering a move as they factor in Sadio Mane’s potential departure.

Tempting Benfica into a swap move could have given United an edge in negotiations, but it appears these options are a clear ‘no-go’, and there may not be any other ways to turn. Perhaps Eric Bailly could be thrown in.

It is encouraging at least that United are looking at different options. It is likely going to take a straight cash offer to land the striker though, even if this is mixed up with installments and add-ons. And the hunt to try and find clubs to take Pereira and Martial continues.
