Ben Foster believes £43 million Man United ace was ‘in no man’s land’ during draw with Liverpool

Ben Foster has given his verdict on Andre Onana’s performance for Manchester United during the 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United were under pressure coming into the game at Anfield but in the end, the Red Devils were more than deserving of a point at the home of their greatest rivals.

Rasmus Hojlund had a golden opportunity to win the game, in what was United’s only real opportunity of putting the ball in the back of the net but they had moments in the second half that they couldn’t capitalise on.

However, one man was in top form for the Red Devils and that was United goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroon international was arguably in the running for the Man of the Match award at Anfield.

However, ex-United goalkeeper Ben Foster was less than impressed with the former Ajax goalkeeper’s performance as he believes his saves are not parried away far enough.

Talking on his YouTube channel, Foster said: “I thought that chance in the second half from Salah, he (Onana) should have caught that effort. I don’t think there was enough pace from Salah, or whoever it was, for him to push that effort out.

“Instead, I think he should just hold that ball and take the pressure off your defenders but he didn’t do that.”

Another moment of contention came with Onana’s ability to collect crosses, which was an issue for former United goalkeeper David De Gea, too.

“He is, at least, on the front foot when he tries and claims these crosses,” Foster said. “He wants to help the team and get involved and that he isn’t the best aerially and is almost trying to prove himself but he seems to be in no man’s land at the minute and he’s trying to push himself to do these things he’s not used to.”

Onana’s form

There is an argument to be made that the Cameroon international cost United a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League, particularly, after the mistakes he made in Istanbul against Galatasaray.

However, in the league, he seems to have adjusted a lot better to the demands of England’s top flight. According to FBREF, United have been expected to concede 24.1 goals based on the shots on target against them but have conceded just 21 goals in England’s top flight.

Despite his inconsistencies in Europe, Onana continues to prove himself in England and has arguably been United’s best summer signing this season.
