Paul Scholes says £43 million Man United player is making teammates nervous following Galatasaray draw

Paul Scholes believes that Andre Onana is not a goalkeeper who instills confidence into his teammates following his error in Manchester United’s 3-3 draw against Galatasaray.

Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead twice to drop points in Istanbul, which was their first draw of the season, remarkably.

Andre Onana parried a Hakim Ziyech free-kick into his own net and the goalkeeper looked nervy from then on and was caught out at his near post by a fierce Muhammed Kerem Aktürkoğlu shot to draw the Turkish side level.

The goalkeeper was beginning to come into his own at Old Trafford but the mistake, on such a big night, was not a good one to make and Paul Scholes was not happy.

Scholes on Onana

Speaking on TNT Sports after the bizarre and frantic draw in Istanbul, the former United midfielder sounded very frustrated with the 27-year-old.

“It’s a shame because he [Onana] has started to look okay the last few weeks. It’s the Champions League where it’s been a struggle for him. I don’t think his concentration is there which is the most important thing for a goalkeeper,” Scholes said.

“He makes his defence nervous and he makes his whole team nervous. He makes simple saves look really, really difficult. The other team probably thinks we’re just going to shoot. He [Onana] looks like he is going to concede every time.”

Despite keeping the joint-most clean sheets in the Premier League, it was a night to forget for Onana and United.

Onana is too calm

Barring his late, great penalty save against FC Copenhagen, Onana has made a crucial mistake in nearly every game for the Red Devils in Europe.

After he completed a pirouette on the halfway line, Rio Ferdinand revealed he would have gone mad at Onana. Despite it being such a display of calmness, it was almost too calm from the goalkeeper, which was a theme of his performance.

He seemed too casual at times, too laid back, which is what you need in an environment like this but not all of the time.

He flapped at a few crosses and punched a few shots that he really should have caught. It’s his shot-stopping that is becoming a concern.

In the league, Onana has looked much more assured but it is in Europe that he struggles. Perhaps it is time for Altay Bayindir to make his debut for the Red Devils against Bayern Munich on matchday six.
