Ayden Heaven emerged as one of Manchester United’s standout performers against Newcastle on Boxing Day with a solid defensive display in a hard-fought win.

Manchester United beat Newcastle 1-0 on Boxing Day to set themselves up to go into 2026 with winning momentum.

The only goal was scored by unlikely scorer Patrick Dorgu, after the 21-year-old performed exceptionally in the first half.

Although the Red Devils faced lots of pressure in the second half, Ruben Amorim’s side had to grind out the win and deserved the three points by the time the full-time whistle had blown.

The result means United are looking for their third clean sheet of the season when they host Wolves at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Amorim has hinted at changing the system in the coming weeks, with evidence of change in defensive shape clear for everyone to see during the win over Newcastle.

Ayden Heaven explains role in back-three at Man Utd

After joining United from Arsenal last year, Ayden Heaven reveals that he arrived at the club having never played in the centre of a back-three defence.

The 19-year-old has become an important figure in Amorim’s team following the injuries suffered by Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire.

Earlier in the season, Heaven had been limited to two appearances off the bench in the Premier League, but the young centre-back has started all five matches in December.

Heaven is expected to keep his place in the team against Wolves, especially after his masterclass performance against Newcastle.

Speaking to ManUtd.com about the role he has played, Heaven explains that he had never played centrally in a back-three before and how it compares to playing on the left side of the same system.

“That middle [spot] is probably one of the most important, because you can’t switch off, can you?” said our no.26, in an exclusive interview with United Review, which features in the official matchday programme for tonight’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“You’re alone against the striker really, so you can’t afford to switch off. It was great obviously and it was true that it was my first time ever playing there, so it was a lot different.”

Amorim has hinted at a system change, which many believe will see United play in a 4-3-3 formation. This is something United fans will be more familiar with, but the head coach will still be expected to get the best out of his squad.

Back-to-back wins are exactly what United need going into the New Year.

Man Utd last kept a clean sheet against Wolves in 2023

Although United haven’t been keeping enough clean sheets (2) this season, it is common belief that Senne Lammens is an upgrade over Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana.

The Belgian will be looking to help United keep their first clean sheet against Wolves since the beginning of the 2023 season when Raphael Varane scored a header in a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Amorim will be aiming for a convincing win over a side United managed to beat 4-1 away from home earlier this month.
