After hinting about a change beforehand, Ruben Amorim used the Manchester United vs Newcastle game to trial a new formation.
Amorim’s ‘new’ system was a simple case of reverting to a flat back four, and it seemed to work, with the Red Devils keeping a clean sheet in a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
The presumption was not to read too much into the formation switch, due to the heavy list of absentees through injury and the AFCON.
However, speaking at his press conference, Amorim has suggested he is open to making the four-man defence more of a regular occurrence.

Ruben Amorim was quizzed by the media at his press conference about his new tweaked tactical approach.
And he says that he will not always be reverting to playing with three centre-backs.
He explained: “When all the players return, we are not going to play all the time with three defenders.”
There are multiple knock-on effects from Amorim’s statement.
What happens to his wing-backs? How does this impact the construction of his midfield? How does he fit all of his attacking players in?
But the real dilemma is around the Manchester United centre-backs, as Amorim will soon be spoiled for choice.

Centre-back dilemma
Ruben Amorim started Ayden Heaven and Lisandro Martinez against Newcastle, and both players were terrific.
Leny Yoro will be determined to force his way back into the team, while Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt are also set to return from injury in 2026.
Perhaps you can discount Maguire due to his expiring contract – but you would typically look at that selection of defenders and take De Ligt and Martinez as the preferred duo thanks to their experience and leadership.
Maguire and Yoro might be third and fourth, leaving Ayden Heaven battling for game time.
This would be unfair on current form. Heaven was terrific against Newcastle, but it is inescapable that his chances of regular game time could be harmed by a switch in formation.

Tyler Fredricson came off the bench for the final minutes to help United close out the win, making his first Premier League appearance this season.
His hopes of breaking into the team on a regular basis will only get harder if United move to two centre-backs.
The formation change does shift Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui into traditional full-back roles, but even with that competition removed, the battle for places is intense.
Heaven has the ability to establish himself as one of the preferred starters – but if that is to happen, one of the really big names will have to be left out.
