Arnau Puigmal has scored his first La Liga goal after deciding to quit Manchester United on a free transfer.
It is a bold decision for any young player to walk away from a potential career at Manchester United.
When Arnau Puigmal left the club in 2021 it was very much his decision. The youngster was lured away by a five-year contract at Spanish side Almeria, who aimed to challenge for promotion at the top of the second division.
The former Espanyol youth prospect played 34 games last season as Almeria were promoted, scoring five goals from midfield.

Arnau Puigmal’s first La Liga goal
The former Spain under-19 international’s decision has proved to be the right career move for him. Had he remained at United he likely would have been sent out on loan.
With Almeria promoted to La Liga, he has been gaining experience in Spain’s top flight, even if he has not featured as quite as regularly this season.
Puigmal has made 15 appearances this campaign, although just three have come as a starter. His fortunes may be pointing up after this weekend.
The 22-year-old scored his first ever La Liga goal, as a starter, to earn his side a valuable point in a 2-2 draw away at Celta Vigo.
Almeria are now in 18th place, on goal difference with 17th. The fight is on to retain their La Liga status for next season.
Almeria’s ex United contingent
Arnau Puigmal is one of three players to leave Manchester United’s academy to sign with Almeria in recent seasons.
The first was Belgian youth international Largie Ramazani, who signed in 2020. Also 22, he has scored three La Liga goals this season, one against Real Madrid and another against United’s Europa League opponents Sevilla.
The most recent was Slovakian youth talent Martin Svidersky. The 20-year-old has not played a minute yet, instead featuring for Almeria’s B team, but has time on his side, penning a long-term contract until 2027.
