Antwerp director makes ’10’ boast over Senne Lammens sale, Man Utd goalkeeper stuck in impossible position

Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens awaits his opportunity after joining the club on deadline day.

There is no argument at all that Manchester United have handled the goalkeeper position appallingly this summer.

Senne Lammens is being eased into action, but there was no Carabao Cup fixture for the goalkeeper to play in this week, after Andre Onana played a large role in the team’s elimination in the previous round.

Manchester United’s mistake with timing of Senne Lammens deal

If United had been more decisive, Lammens would have signed for the start of pre-season, and got opportunities to state his case for game time on the US tour – and playing in the Carabao Cup.

United only signed Lammens on deadline day, and then had to shunt Onana out on loan to Trabzonspor before the Turkish window closed.

Altay Bayindir continues as United’s number one for now, with it unclear when Ruben Amorim will decide is a good moment to throw Lammens into action.

And while this goes on, questions are being asked about why United would sign a goalkeeper who Amorim does not rate higher, at the moment, than the distinctly average Bayindir.

Paul Scholes blasted: “What’s the price? 20 million euros. It tells me he’s not a top goalkeeper.”

It’s hard for Lammens to change minds when he is not given an opportunity to play. Instead, the likes of Scholes are making an assumption about Lammens, without getting the chance to watch him and decide.

There is also speculation United are looking at signing another goalkeeper in 2026, which would ask further questions of Lammens.

He deserves a chance to show what he can do first. He is currently stuck in an impossible position.

Antwerp director pleased with transfer business

Manchester United fans have not had the chance to assess whether Senne Lammens is a sensible investment so far.

His former club are very happy with his sale, boasting about the impressive profit they have made on the deal.

Antwerp director Marc Overmars was quoted via Voetbal Krant: “If you have zero euros to spend in the past two seasons and from that point of view you raise 45 million euros, then you get a 10 in the business world.

“Value for money, that’s what it’s called. We got Senne for zero euros and Doumbia for four hundred thousand. That’s different from investing 18 million and hoping for something to come out of it.”

On the flip side, Manchester United have invested a sizeable fee in Lammens and are waiting to see a return.

United’s upcoming fixtures are against Brentford and Sunderland before the international break, before facing Liverpool.

After deciding not to throw Lammens in against City and Chelsea, the longer the club wait to give Lammens a debut, the more questions will be asked. It is time for Ruben Amorim to be brave.

Lammens can’t impress if he can’t play. And he might just save Manchester United millions on another new goalkeeper.
